One of the adverse effects of aluminum sludge is rust. Rust requires special attention when processing workpieces made of steel materials, but aluminum sludge also rusts depending on the environment.
Sludge during material processing can cause aluminum rust. One of the reasons for aluminum rust is the deterioration of coolant fluid. As coolant fluid deteriorates, it tends to turn from alkaline to acidic, making aluminum more susceptible to rust.
Rust is also likely to occur when multiple materials are processed on a single machine. When sludge is retained, such as after processing rust-prone steel, it mixes with the coolant solution and adheres to the material, causing rust to form.
Rust is caused by coolant fluid, so if fine sludge or suspended sludge is seen, it should be collected promptly to reduce rust.
Aluminum can be contained in floating oil as floating sludge. If sludge in floating oil is left unattended, it is more likely to decompose and emit foul odors.
If the coolant fluid is not exposed to air due to floating oil, bacteria will proliferate significantly, lowering the PH and causing foul odors. If not managed properly, coolant fluid will decompose, so action must be taken before bad odors occur.
One solution is to change the coolant fluid to one that is odor- and corrosion-resistant. If it is difficult to change the coolant fluid, make sure that the coolant is being properly managed. If foreign substances such as sludge are mixed in and remain in the coolant, promptly removing them will prevent the coolant from becoming rancid.
Coolant filtration equipment is used to filter sludge generated from equipment. There are a variety of products available depending on the intended use, so it is important to determine "whether the coolant filtration equipment is suitable for the purpose" and "whether the equipment is suited to the characteristics of sludge.
